I am not able to keep my acans happy. They lose their color brightness and don't seem to want to puff up. My parameters are stable 8.4-8.7 Alk, 420-440 Cal, 1320-1340 Mag, Sal - 1.025

I have them lower in my tank in a little higher flow area under 2 AI Hydra 26

My Zoas, Acros, Chalice, Montis, Favias, etc do well. Any tips?

You can try gradually acclimating them to your light.. I know some AI lights have an acclimation mode that could be it... maybe spot feeding could help, its usually not necessary though.. maybe put them under slightly lower flow as well ...

What's your Nitrate and Phosphate at?

Did you solve your acan issue? I’m in the same situation. Stable parameters however low nutrients. I’m wondering if that could be the case. I also just started to spot feed.

I’m no expert by any means but I have a Waterbox 20 Cube with an AI Prime light. I grow acans like weeds in my tank. Every acan in my tank started out as a 2 polyp-3 polyp frag except one.
Here’s what I’ve found:
They like moderate light, when they pale out or change color too much it’s usually because the white & Uv light setting is too high. They do seem to love blue light, for those interested I’d be happy to share a screen shot of my lighting schedule. Just PM me.
They don’t mind flow, and seem to handle many different types of flow I have them all over my tank, but most are on the sand bed in my tank. I have two small AQAMAI wave pumps in my tank along with my return pump. The wave pumps are located in different areas and set on random types of flow and intensity to attempt to create counter concurrent flow and reduce dead spots.
They like to be fed, I usually feed them lrs reef frenzy in a syringe or turkey baster to each frag once per week along with 2 broadcast feedings per week rotating between oyster feast, reef roofs, & reef chili along with a & b nutrition from Red Sea 2 times per week when I do my broadcast feedings. When I do my broadcast feedings I turn the return pump and skimmer off for about 20 minutes or so.
They like some nutrients in the water, I keep my nitrates under 15...they usually run around 2-10 max depends on where I’m at in my water change schedule.

They seems to be sensitive to magnesium and I have noticed that if my mag levels drop to the lower end of normal range my acans aren’t as open or puffy. I strive to keep them around 1400 or so.

They have been some of the most bulletproof corals in my tank, and all grow literally like weeds and have tons of new heads all the time.

I keep my calcium around 450-480, my alk around 150ppm. My ph runs 8.0 , salinity @ 1.025. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite.
I do run a protein skimmer (eshoppes Nano skimmer) & do water changes of about 5 gallons twice a month.

Hope this helps!

i'm not sure whats up with mine. they are just unhappy. My tank is pretty stable. I recently started feeding them directly. I'll try to see where i am off from your parameters. They still have decent color but don't really puff up and haven't had any growth/additional heads.

What are you feeding them now?

Reef Roids. I started to direct feed them with a coral feeder pipet. The guy at the lfs said to to just spread a thick amount over the polyps.

Reef roids are good but you could also try frozen food as well, they seem to puff up more with real meaty foods atleast IME.:)

i feed my fish frozen mysis, brine, and blood worms. could i use these? the thing is the fish will probably pick the food out.

I've never tried blood worms but the other two I use all the time, though I don't see why blood worms would be an issue. I used to just feed my fish first to distract them then target feed each Acan head.

I have several acans and usually it’s too much flow or too much light with em . So how is your Zoa’s and acros doing ?

Mine like Coral Frenzy pellets once a week. LRF left in water column by fish. Now trying phytoplankton from AlgaeBarn for pods. Random flow

One trick I have had good luck with; get a small shot glass fill about 25% with RO/DI water, put in reef roids until the mixture becomes almost like a slurry/paste; use a long syringe to spot feed this slurry on the acan heads. Just a small amount on each head a couple times per week.

Yes, that works well also.

I think acans prefer meaty foods. Interested in what folks say about the color wash out, as this is something I have experienced as well

Same here. I make a thick slurry of roids and they respond well and had good growth as well

I’ve never had them fade colors. I had them go to one polyp on a tank mishap and come back. Larry’s Reef Frenzy feeds everything in tank after clown bites it, it’s meaty. I’ve seen them open when it hits the water. They also open when they smell the Coral Frenzy pellets. The one in there now was down to 3 heads, one was open and looked hollow. Now it’s a thriving full ball of heads. I also do weekly wc.
