Got these as "extras" with a coral purchase. No idea, know nothing about them. Any help greatly appreciated.

Red, with speckles and bluish purple oral discs

Pretty much just silverish grey so far

Haha, just keep them far away from everything else. They do pack a punch though.

Nobody else has an opinion on these or can tell me anything more about them?

first one looks more like an acan. echinata to me. here's an example:

while i don't think they are rare, i do think they are cool. it is pretty sweet looking!

the acan fad, imo, is on it's way downhill (at least, it's post peak phase), and lords were top of the food chain. definitely a nice coral. mine has never sent out sweepers, but by gosh they sure will tear another coral up!

the second one looks like it could be an acan. rotundoflora. the rotundofloras are getting close to that "chalice borderline", and i've seen them called chalices, while technically they are not.

while you won't get rich off them, they are nice, and look like sweet-sized colonies

I bought something similiar to the first one from Mr Coral and it was labeled as a superman acan I believe.

May I ask what you paid and how big a specimen you got?

They both appear to be acan echinata's .Like everyone else has said they are nasty stingers. Anything gets near them or touches them they can do some damage. I have the orange crush echinata and it has remained the same bright orange in medium to high light. I have owned others in the past that got better colored in higher lighting. The will take food readily if you want to feed them. As far as value goes the two you have are not expensive. I would guess anywhere in the $25-35 range. Not too bad for freebies !

Thank you; that gives me some ideas. Any suggestions on lighting and care?

great freebies you got there!

1st one looks like a. echinata....great colouration on this one!
2nd one looks like a. echinata as well......a bit stressed, bleached it seems.

a. rotundoflora does not have any discernable polyps in the same way echinata and lordhowensis does.......(that is, it does not have raised corallites.).

Play around a bit with the lighting. The 1st one looks ok but the 2nd one looks a little bleached so give it some lower or difused lighting. Like i said i have a bright orange with green centers piece and i have had it under 175 watt and 400 watt and his color stayed the same. The green and orange piece i have got better coloring closer to a 250 watt m.h. In my experience with them they are very easy to care for. I can't think of anything special to recommend. Just like with any other new coral start lower and move them up over time. If you don't like the colors you see go back to where they were. Hope that helps a little.
