I just added 20ml of reefchem carbonate instead of 20ml of magnesium.

My tank has an actual water volume of 40gallons.

What steps if any should I take right now?

Reefchem? Do you mean Seachem?

If Seachem Reef Carbonate, that boosted alk by only 1.4 dKH, which is not enough to bother doing anything about. :)

I was about to say that amount would not have much impact... but my calculator is much slower than Randy's brain

alright yea seachem sorry was in a hurry.

Just tested dkh it is 10.4 right now. 20 minutes after the accident. ph is 8.4

Is it a clear liquid supplement? If so then the alkalinity might have been up by not more than 1 dKH and the pH would have spiked but might already have returned to normal value.

If it is a powder than the pH and alkalinity are likely (very) high requiring action.
