Did a water change last night and tested water parameters today. My birds nest was looking a little funny which normally tells me my alk is low. I did some testing and alk was 6.4 dkh and calc was 335. I did the math I always do to bump the levels 1dkh and 50ppm and retested. Somewhere I messed up because my alk Jumped to 8.7! My green stags almost instantly started sliming and turned bone white. Everything else seems fine just those two. Will they adjust and slowly get color back?

I’m going to assume that they RTNed, but let’s all hope it was a bleaching event, since you can at least recover from that. Sorry to hear about that, alk spikes really suck!

Normally after an alk swing it takes about two weeks and corals will start to stn and rtn

I do wonder it it was the alk or the ph.

And , man, sorry to hear that. Hate it.

I went from NSW, to RSCP some and had different issues. This my questioning the alk.

How did you alter alk? Sodium carbonate or bicarb (baking soda)?

I use the BRS two part solution which is soda ash. The two SPS in question are still bone white but sometimes at night I still see some polyp extension. The other SPS took a hit but don't seem to be getting any worse. My LPS seem to be unaffected.

weird, I had an alk spike from 7.5 to 16dKH in a matter of hours and nothing really was affected except growth rate on some acros. I wonder if the lower alk to begin with had them stressed and this event made it worse? I have never had luck with birds nests at lower alk.
