Due to mistakes... our tank is at 1.015. Im fixing that. I understand I can change salinity for corals right away and as soon as the water is a bit warmer, Im putting them back in.

Fish: I hear they cant have rapid salinity changes (although the initial drop was quite sudden, so yeah). So, theyre in a bucket, and I have increased the salinity to 1.018. How quickly can I raise the salinity? I was hoping to get them back in the tank by maybe thursday at the latest, but I am also told I should raise it over the course of a few weeks. I dont have a qt tank.... and a bucket isnt ideal for many reasons. So... how fast can I raise it?

So is the bucket at .015 and you have to increase to .018. within the hour or two. Just keep adding water with higher salinity until you match. Once the salinity is matched at .018 are you adding them back into the DT?

I wouldn’t raise it by more then .005 per day. Fish are hardy and most will tolerate large salinity swings as long as it’s within a ‘normal’ range.

1.015 is low but over the course of a couple of days you should be okay to raise it to a normal level

Fish tend to handle going from high to low salinities better than the vice versa. People do freshwater dips all the time for example. They should be OK in the salinity you have right now. Instead of topping off with freshwater use very salty water until you get to your ideal salinity. This shouldn't take more than a couple days. Never put undissolved salt in your tank though. Best of luck!

re: "I wouldn’t raise it by more then .005 per day." That seems like a HUGE variation. Are you sure you don't mean .0005? As in, one water change to raise from 1.020 to 1.0205. And the next change would result in 1.021.

1.020 to 1.025 seems like a HUGE jump.

I believe he meant .005 over the course of the day, not in one water change. Which I agree with, I've mentioned osmodic shock in some of my post, which is what happens to fish when they are shocked into a much higher salinity.
