This is my first nem, he's a bubble tip. Anyway, it's not been going smooth and I'm getting neurotic about it. Day one, he just sucked himself in and floated the tank with the current within 2 hours of him being placed anywhere.

The first evening in the middle of the night I saw him below a powerhead on the sand and starting to open up. I have a tiny hydor, so I'm not sure I need to worry, but I made a cover out of filter floss right away.

On day two, towards the evening I placed him in a spot on the top of my rock scape he liked enough to stick to and shimmy himself into a crevice. That night, after the lights went out he opened up beautifully! As soon as the lights came on this morning he balled up and sunk deep into the rock work, he's been in there a good 14 hours and looks to be upside down now.

I'm wondering if I should find a way to encourage him to leave there via power head and suggest a place lower lighting and flow near the bottom of the tank, or if I should leave him be and let him hole up for a bit longer. Maybe turn off my powerhead and let the return be the only flow till he finds a spot?

My running plan is to stay hands off for 4 days, if he doesn't move by then I will position a power head on him and try to get him to leave, place him in lower flow. I'm wondering if I should keep my power head on or not though for the sake of the rest of the tank.

As to his condition, his guy does seem a bit washed out as for tentacle colors but there is some rose hue to him. To be honest I haven't seen his foot. I wasn't carefully watching the lfs salesman remove him. He really hasn't attached anywhere in the tank except the one place I felt resistance.

Leave it for now because you just recently added it . Since you have a a filterflows around the Powerhead there no worry .
It will keep moving until it is comfortable in your tank .
Do you know how to care for one? (Don’t mean to offend you but a lot of people don’t know )

Thanks, I've done research on care and dont mind you asking. Im open to tips on anything I've overlooked. I'm keeping my water changes regular, and testing water at least a few days a week. I plan on giving it pieces of shrimp once or twice a week if it opens... and pretty much letting it do its thing.

It's a bit nerve racking just watching it blow aimlessly or end up lodged deep in a live rock where i can barely see it.

I recommend not to feed for 1-2 weeks to reduced stress but after you can feed it. How did you acclimate it ?

That’s good. Don’t be alarmed when you see it deflate once or twice . The BTA will do a waterchange. So far now just ride it out.

Thanks, how long do I let it stay crammed deep in the rock before I take action in your opinion?

Usually your not supposed to mess with them at all because of there sensitivity but I would wait 4 days

He was so dead, I gave him a little blast with my Turkey baster and chunks came flying. Probably dying from day one, the lfs sold him on the cheap... but said it was because he was small.

Sorry to hear that.... Did it look open and full at the lfs ?

Honestly no, not open like it was here in the dark. In the store he was just open a bit in the center with his bubbles at the top. Tentacles never extended there.

I never saw a foot either. I think I was sold a damaged nem. It's just sad... I lost a shrimp this week too, i was thinking that was why the ammonia spike and having to do 2 water changes in two days... but this nem was probably rotting since Wednesday early am.

Aww that sucks , I always make sure the nem is fully open and healthy with no tears in the foot.

I will be diligent in the future, it's been a rough week of fish keeping. Thanks again for your insights!

No problem. Ik it seems risky but I float the nem for 30 mins and drop it in the tank
