Acid oceans demand greater reef care

The more humanity acidifies and warms the world's oceans with carbon emissions, the harder we will have to work to save our coral reefs. That's the blunt message from a major new study which finds that ocean acidification and global warming will combine with local impacts like overfishing and nutrient runoff to weaken the world's coral reefs right when they are struggling to survive.

great article, but im growing very weary about all these uninvestigated claims.
every post about environmental worries just sit there and spew more and more rumor. where is the facts? there isnt any!
queensland is hardly an authority on anything. instead of wasting money on these studies based upon farse studies. why dont they do something about it.
instead you have chinese ships running right through the great barrier reef.
the point here is that they dont know what will happen instead they guess and use the media to bend everyone in favor of their study.
everything in moderation is a perfect solution, but instead they wasted how many millions when they could of planted a billion trees to help impact the co2. those oil eating microbes surely helped the o2 levels in the ocean right? perhaps they should go with more natural fertilizers, but instead they choose chemicals. why? because it makes them more $.

Very well said Nixer. I still think there are things they could be doing to at least get the ball rolling. Kind of like the US Navy wanting to destroy all kinds of reef just to park their aircraft carrier off of Guam(i think it was Guam)

The conclusions reached by this study are based on hard science. Fertilizer runoff adds nitrogen and phosphorus to the water column, and like it does on land, it fertilizes marine plants and algae. This most directly impacts humans when the shellfish industry can't fish because of red tide, a phytoplankton that can produce toxins. These toxins can sicken or kill people, fish, birds, and other animals. Because N and P are limiting nutrients in the ocean, the addition of these two nutrients, either from man-made or "natural" fertilizers can contribute to these algal blooms. The very same thing happens in our tanks when we overfeed or our skimmers aren't functioning properly. Slight changes in ocean pH toward the acid end have been measured as well and is likely due to the formation of carbonic acid (H2CO3) by reaction of CO2 with water. At ocean pHs, the stable form of carbonic acid is the first dissociated form, bicarbonate (HCO3-) and H+ ions. This is the dominate chemical species between pH 6.4 and 10.33. The behavior of CO2 in reaction with water is described visually by a Bjerrum plot. All this being said, there are of course other issues, just like the ships running aground, overfishing, and as this is a modelling study, the model is probably not 100% capable of prognostication. Nature is an extremely complex system, and that makes modelling exceptionally difficult.

yes what your saying is true, but you failed to see what my post was saying.
global warming is not proven by anything!
neither is many of the other reasons they list.
this is purely simple spewed possible reasons based by no science!
according to modeling studys they said burmese pythons can live in new york yet an actual study done in SC proven that wrong and so did the other 18 scientists that actually studied the animals in question.
modeling studys are pure crap and they have always been that!

this is no different than commercials with famous ppl claiming they actually use products or doctors claiming that certain pills actually work. its no different
the only thing different is this guy just gave possible unproven reasons as facts!

if i had a 100 billion$ i could hire some lobbists and they would see the real side or whatever side i saw fit.

Nixer I agree with you!! It is also like people saying that with reduced carbon foot prints we are reversing so-called "Global Warming" where is this proof? The only proof they have is every 300 years the Earth trends colder than normal! (Something like that!)

also i have not seen one study on global warming that said or even mentioned axial tilt changes! also that the earth does not revolve around the sun in a perfect circle!
but your never going to see it. just like el nino! which is actually caused by magnetic forces in the planet which is also impacted by for mentioned rotational differences!

To add to that why didn't it make head line news that some airport runways are being renumbered based on the Right and Left (R / L). If the runway is parallel to equator then the recent shift in North and South Poles cause most to be renumbered so they are navigated on a GPS correctly.

that would be too hard to explain. the northpole, the compass and true north are 3 different things
normally most ppl dont want to accept actual truths, unless its on the 5pm news. im hardly a phd, but i could very well have been one, only i chose a simple path.

Whether or not we know what is going on in the world we seem to understand one thing. GLOBAL WARMING is real. It is an event that may in fact just be irreversable if we allow things to go as they please. It is very sad that we as a species have resorted to the use of all natural resources possible. From oil to coal to natural gas to what ever means we find neccessary to survive in this slowly dying world of ours. We as a species can adapt quickly to adversity in every form, but nature; nature takes years upon years to adapt to the circumstances of tragic events. We are helpless. It would take the world's human population to help irradicate our insatiable needs for natural resource that pollute our world's atmophere which in turn has problematic effects to our natural world. Will this ever occur when the world's population will get together for one sole purpose, I think not. Tragedy has a way of bringing people together for a common cause so we must wait to react rather than react now to ensure a promise for tomorrow's survival. It's human nature.

I sit here wishing that eveything for the world will be solved in my lifetime, but unfortunately, the world doesn't see eye-to-eye with people from different backgrounds and their beliefs. If we as a whole could set aside our differences for our world we will help ensure that our present world will flourish for our generations to come. I am sad to learn what is going on in the world, but I like to believe somewhere, somehow, someone with a voice to be heard, will lead the way.

But as of now, belief is all we have. And belief is the root cause for all of mankinds ongoing wars. When we find it in our hearts to do better for the world and its entirety we will have something tangible and successful to share with our generations to come.
