Got this frag from LFS...need ID

Kind of hard to tell without seeing the polyps but possibly a Tyree Purple Monster. Best bet is to go back to the store and show them the picture of it and have them tell you the name. They should know.

Doubt it’s Tyree purple monster, because if it was it’d be labeled as such.

Looks to be A. loripes or A. rosaria, common PM imposter

The real Tyree purple monster is thought to be
A. longicyanthis

Wow, that’s an I’d I never would have guessed for that piece! I do agree the frag is something similar to or either a loripes or rosaria but it’s hard to tell with this small piece. Nice frag for sure.

100% not a purple monster. That’s one of the rarest around and would have far fewer polyps. At that stage and size of your coral, it’s nearly impossible to tell. That could turn out to be anything, but I can assure you it is not a purple monster.

Agree, very rare to see the Steve Tyree Purple Monster these days, last time I chatted with Steve on FB even he said even he currently didn't have a frag of it.

There is a member here that has one and is selling a frag. Almost got it but price was fairly steep. Plus they grow slowwwwww. If the above frag was a purple monster that would probably be about 5 years worth of growth of it started out 1/2”.

Yep definitely a notoriously slow grower, very cool Christmas tree like growth patterns too.

thanks guys for chiming in. I asked the LFS owner and he says its a blue stag. The above frag is just 1/2 inch got it for $15 :)
Yet to see any noticeable growth.

A true Tyree Purple Monster would be $2000-2500 for a piece that size, or more. Unless you paid that, then no chance. I can get $250-400 for a 1/4 inch encrusted nub.

It is a smoothie, so not one of the common types of stags. A. Lorpies would be my guess right now, but I would need to see it grow and a closer shot.

Like I mentioned above I suspect A. loripes or rosaria as well, the two can be difficult to differentiate.

If this colony was Tyree purple monster, I would think it would be a little under a grand, tops. I paid $90 for a 1.5 inch frag of PM back in 2006.
I generally dont keep up to date with the current "designer name" coral market so I could be wrong.

I have a waiting list about 25 people long for Purple Monster. If you can find anybody willing to sell it, it is going to be a few hundred at least, and probably more. It is really hard to find anymore and the people who have it mostly just trade it and accumulate new, nice corals (guilty myself). I am not fragging mine for any less than $250. I will probably get two or three PMs of people wanting frags just for these posts. I am not even kidding....

There seem to be more imposters than the real deal anymore.

Edit: here is a few examples of some PMs that I got the last time that I mentioned it... names removed...

I have a good size colony of purple monster I paid 50 for. It's not a frag, but a colony. My LFS isn't big on doing name thing, they have a few high end named stuff, but dont charge insane prices. The PM I got is a true one, cause i know where and who it came from, and was confirmed by them. Also got a big colony of Red Planet from then as well.

Post pics! same with you jda ! I love seeing that PM is still around!

I will try and get a fresh one this weekend. Lights are out right now... and I should be out too.

I would love to see at $50 PM colony as well.

Here is one of my nubs from about a year ago - this one is about 2 inches back then. I keep a few different places in case one falls off or something decides to munch on it. Notice the sheen and the white polyps - a must for true Tyree PM. Without the white polyps or the sheen, then it is usually an imposter.
