Hello, I recently noticed the base of my WD turning white. Could this be stn? Coloration hasn’t decreased and pe is good 95% of the time
(randomly single polyp retract but they come back out in about 20 min)
It gets high flow and about 250-270ish par

Alk 8.3
Calc 460
Mag - haven’t tested in a week, but last 1370
Nitrates 8
Phos .12

I added photos from tonight and 2 days ago, as you can see the piece looks healthy which is why I’m growing concerned over it.

Could be, but could also be new growth encrusting on the frag plug, I'd watch it though

Anytime it starts at the bottom and begins to climb I'd be worried. How long have you had it?

Looks new to your system.
How long have you had it and where did it come from?

Going for 2 weeks on Saturday it came from pieces of the ocean
I should mention it was fragged off a colony when I got it
Did you mount it? What was your procedure?

Edit; only asking because sometimes if you leave to glue on the frag in too long before dipping it in water it could burn the skin a little bit and that is maybe what you're seeing.

Hmm, I don’t think it’s this because they used some putty and inserted some of the acro into the putty to hold it down.

After they fragged it we waited about 5 mins for it to set. I got home, dipped and cut the stem off the frag plug leaving a little just to glue onto the rock work

The latest procedure is SG, EPOXY, SG sandwich.

I'm in the camp to watch it, if it expands, snip and remount.

Definitely looks like I might have to trim, I’ll keep you guys updated and appreciate the fast responses

How much should be cut off the bottom by the way? Is there a rule of thumb in some sort?

Cut above where it's white. Make sure it's all healthy tissue around the frag.

is this a normal occurrence? As in is there a good chance this could actually be saved?

If it's a bacteria infection and you remove the infected portion then yes. I have had success trimming infected portions off.

But there is so much else involved here like maturity of the tank, overall conditions, lights, flow, coralline present, etc...

Looks like growth to me. Keep a close eye on it to see if it spreads up. I really don't see anything to panic about. If it does spread up, pop it off of the epoxy ball and mount to a tacky glue ball on a new plug. Use the glue to cover receded area. Kenny probably has his colony in a lot more than 270 par so maybe try moving up a bit.

Hello to all, this is an update it’s been about 2 weeks and I can definitely tell it is encrusting but there is a random hole in the piece, pe has not been the same for a while now though.

(Any brown spots are just shaded, but there is a random empty spot around the bottom)

Also note I had an emerald go rogue and begin picking at acros and montis, could this be a reason? I moved the crab to another tank since then
