I just received this frag in the mail. I noticed a lot of damage near the base. When I blast it with a turkey baster, you can see white things stuck to it.

I hit it was Coral RX and Bayer (30ml for 2 cups, 10 minutes). I still see the same. What could this be?

They look like Mesenterial Filaments to me. Sometimes these are used as a defence mechanism, other times it could just be a indication that the coral is stressed out. Probably the latter in this case.

Could it be RTN?

Don't think so. I think nudibranch eggs myself.

Those would come out of the corallites I believe.

Let's see if someone else can identify.

I want to be clear that NOTHING came off during my dip. I dipped Bayer (30ml per cup which kills AEFW) and coral RX (.5 cap for 2 cups water).

If these were eggs, wouldn't there be adults to die first?

Yes. But the eggs are hard to remove. They are more resistant to coral dips.

I still need more eyes on this because I'm not sure what they are.

My immediate thought was eggs... I would personally either toss the frag or remove the “eggs” with a toothbrush and quarantine by itself for a long no time, depending on its cost. Good job catching it!

So as an update to anyone following this, I have tossed the frag. Over the course of the day, it RTN's pretty dang fast. The white you see on the original pic covered almost 85% of it.

I contacted the seller, and he is sending me a new frag after its been cut/healed. The other frags I got from him are looking healthy and they're are being kept under close observation.

It’s mesenterial filaments. They can come out through the skin.

The coral is very stressed. I would not have dipped it unless you don’t have a QT.

Yea if a frag had filaments out from shipping stress and you dipped it, it’s almost certain death. :(

Here is a pic of a really bad stressed frag I received in a shipment quite a while ago. You can see the filaments coming through the skin.

@BoomCorals Thanks for the confirmations. I'm pretty new to SPS, so this was a learning experience for me. I have 2 QT's right now, but both are cycled with copper (planning on putting a coral QT together soon). Because of that, I went with my normal coral dip process rather than risking any nasty bugs getting in my system.

This is the first time I've had an issue like this. Sure, the colors may not be the best at the start, but they always bounce back. Not this one :(
