I know there are a lot of avid acro collectors on here but don't see (unless it's hidden ) much activity in the trading area.

I was curious what might hold someone back from doing trades outside of the obvious they don't ship.

I built quite the collection in the past doing trades with many hobbyist (most of whom aren't in the hobby anymore from what I can see) as well as a handful of vendors.

Just a question

Thanks for any insight (as I rebuild my obsession)

I would love to trade with folks but the shipping is abysmal these days both in cost and reliability.

The best option might be to seek out members that are near you or see if there are any local clubs so you can trade and avoid shipping.

The high cost of salt, specimens, shipping and electricity all work against the old model of (free) frag trades with folks on here who are not "just around the corner" from each other.

It seems like there is still some "trading" going on, I have noticed it seems to occur between some of the professional coral farmers?

The other issue is Acro Eating Flat Worms and other pests that can be spread between tanks. Risk isn't worth it for many.

SO, it is not impossible, just the situation has changed with the times.

It's mostly the obvious (shipping) here. I'd consider shipping under the right circumstances, but LED lighting, filters, and clever photography make it harder to trust that what you see in the photo is what you're going to get. When I got started in this hobby, the photography of coral seemed more true-to-life (often better in person than in the picture, actually). The opposite is true today.

We have a solid local reef club and I've been trading with reefers there for a long time and still am with great success. There are more pseudo hobbyists who are trying to turn a profit by selling frags for premium prices, but those are easy enough to tune out.

I have a small collection of acros . I always have been interested in trading to both bank my coral and to grow my collection. Unfortunately it’s been hard to find someone with not only “mid-high end” acros but that would also be interested in trading.

because I use shipyouraquatics.com shipping is a little high. I think the most it would be to ship to the other side of the state would be about 100$ which is not much in you think about it considering you are getting new pieces and banking/backing up your own.
