I got my hands on a small colony of this about two years ago. It is a very odd acro. It has produced painfully slow growth over those two years, despite being healthy by all outward appearances. I was wondering if anyone has a piece of it or if anyone has ever seen a piece of it. If so could you please share your experience with it.

Will try and get one. It is rather difficult to photograph well

Thought I had a couple pics from when I first got it in, but I must have cleaned out the photobucket account. Here is a shot from today

I have a smaller frag that came off when I was rearranging the frag tank. What do you have acro wise for trade?

Similar yes, but my piece has not put out a single branch w/ a terminal polyp in 2 years. All it has done is try to put up columns and plate out. It's growth form from what I have researched is similar to Acropora palifera. It is one of the handful of acropora species that does not exhibit terminal growth polyps on the end of a branch instead it developes rows of terminal polyps along the upper surface of a pillar as it grows.

I was talking to Steve Tyree and he says the purple unknown does not really grow branches either.
Here is a pick of MY LE purple unknown

Hmmm. The colony he shows on his site shows some branches, and the writeup mentions a different polyp color on the branches. The piece I got was a wild collected piece that came to me from Dennis Reynolds of Aqua Marine, and was specifically labled by him as acropora cuneata. That is all I have to go by on this.

Agreed. I was not trying to say anything negative about the purple monster. just pointing out the differences I saw in it. I would like to get this coral to a few other people just to see what it does in different tanks
