Just wanted add the pumps I’m currently running. Didn’t want to light a wick on flow debate and run LOL!
Originally it was just 2-xf350 max spect gyre for about a year then stuff start to grow and block flow. Now I’ve added my old Jebao CP 90 and 2 MLW 30.
Xf 350 rated around 5400
CP 90 3000
MLW 3000

my old 29g I ran ton of random crashing flow
Cp 90 3000
2 Modded maxjets rated at 3000

For sure. It was really just an observation to the original post that he may want to verify his current par levels, as I see he was using 250w MH.

6ml of EZ trace daily.
I do not know the % of iodine.
On the label it says 0.005%.
All I know is that 6ml a day keeps iodine detectable between 0-.06.

I don’t add iodine specifically but I use to in my old tank. I might revisit. So far I’m happy where the tank is heading. I know pics are proof so here’s a few. Gary Bonsai w/o orang lens. The other shot is with orange lens. Everything gets blown out blue without it.

Wow. The diversity of opinion regarding flow here is astonishing. I have no PE (in my DT), fast growing sticks, a ton of flow (2XMP40 and 2XReefwave on a 5 foot tank) and limited Iodine.

Time to experiment with less flow and more Iodine I guess.

My african flame back took to carpet surfing one day, and didn't have an angel for many months. I noticed I started to have PE! Fast forward a couple months and all my sticks are furry as heck!

Walked into an LFS one day with the wife, and she fell in love with a tiny little lemon peel. After much debate(I obviously lost the argument), we bought it. within a day I lost all PE again, and again have never seen it nip on any coral. Still have 0 PE as long as I have an angel in the tank.

I swear to god SPS can smell dwarf angels and just hide their polyps.

That is pretty compelling causal evidence. I do have decent (not amazing) PE in my frag systems and no angels in there. I used to have PE in my display a long time ago, but cannot remember when I added the coral beauty.

For my system, high flow, very low nutrient plus large amount of feeding of freeze-dried phyto and rotifers gives me awesome polyp extension.

Like this red stag here, for example.

There is a slight difference between the polyp extension day vs night. However I would say the polyps are well. Extended during day time as well.

I've been reading a lot about lighting in a short amount of time. I have no real world experience.

I wonder what would happen if you turned down or shut off the LED lights. I measured par with a par meter and had everything setup based on numbers using LED only lighting, and I had poor results. I cut back on my lighting even though it 2ould put me below what par should be, and the results have been positive. I feel like LED put out a harsher light that some corals don't take to kindly to. My reading has shown there are quite a few folks who prefer LED as an add on for visual pop as opposed to actual light for photosynthesis.

Again I am new and do not have much if any experience.

The issue with reading about LED lighting here is that MH and T5 people vigorously attack LED's with unsubstantiated claims. Google scholar is a better place for lighting information on t5 vs MH vs LED. I find that members here are too biased to have a decent discussion on that topic specifically. There is no difference in performance due to the method of light creation, only in spread, color (though debatable to some degree), and intensity. Light is light.

There is always the problem of evaluating the impact of a single factor when we are dealing with such a complex system such as the reef tank.
