Acropora Millepora Showoff Thread!

Really. thats nice to know. Kinda bummed tho. Lol
Derek, don't be bummed!!! Spaths are one of my favorites acros ever! That's why I can spot them from across a room. You can tell by the tips, or the lead corallites. If you notice, millies have a pronounced corallite. They kind of poke out a bit. Spaths have tips that form a kind of rounded point. Much rarer than millies, and VERY sensitive to fluctuations in chemistry. They are infamous for being one of the worst all time shippers (particularly wild colonies), so if you have a healthy one, you are lucky. They are closely related to milleporas, and endemic to a small area in Australia. For reference, here are a couple of links and pics of other Spathulatas so you can get familiar with the differences.

And here is one I recently bought that unfortunately couldn't survive 14 hours of mild weather shipping:

Hope this helps. They are an amazing coral that has yet to really hit its stride in our hobby - and for that I'm glad :)

Well thats cool because the guy that i got it from, bout it as a wild caught colony. He had it for a at least 6-8 months and sold it to me for $70 because hes getting out of the hobby. I love it no matter what it is. Sorry for ur loss. It would have been a good piece. If you want i can try to sell you a piece if i frag it.

Thanks man! I may have to take you up on that offer some day! Maybe Scott @uniquecorals can chime in and give a little better advice on care and husbandry than I am able to so you can provide optimum conditions for it. Those guys know their stuff!

Yea it is one of my favorite pieces. I can wait for it to grow more. It was definitely a good price. It is almost 6 inches across. And yea i would love more info on it. I know they know there stuff. I might start a showoff thread for spaths.

Fantastic idea! There are some lurkers out there holding some really amazing pieces too. Oops, just realized we hijacked this thread... Sorry OP! Maybe you should start one now lol

The purple tips on that sunset are awesome. That's not a morph I have seen before.
Yeah, the mother died off years ago for basically everyone I knew that had it. This is the only surviving colony, well mini colony left like this. I enjoy it much better then the original style, has a more deep orange to it as well. The purple tips like that I never got to come out until about 3 months ago, then it took off with growth.

Btw, Scott @uniquecorals, I hope you don't mind I posted your pic... My fingers worked faster than my brain thinking about asking for permission first...
Hey no problem! Feel free to use our pics in this forum. As long as you're not using them to sell someone else's coral, LOL

And Acropora spathulata IS a bit of a challenge...It seems like a Millie, and you'd think it would travel like a Millie, grow like a Millie, etc....Unfortuantely, it can be a challenge...It's a coral that simply likes high light, high flow, lots of food, stable environment. It frags okay, but a fair amount of the frags crap out along the way, or take a long time to encrust and grow...interestingly, we've found that larger frags tend to do better in this species...
