Acropora polyps bubbling???

I will try to get some more pics tonight and post them for you all. Might be tomorrow to get the best light in the tank.

ive been doing it for over a year though and have not adjusted the amount. my po4 stays pretty consistent as well. so not sure how that could cause it all of a sudden

It's one of those things that happens from time to time but no one really knows what's up. There are reports of it healing, of it not healing but new tissue is normal, and some, but fewer, reports of death. Sorry to not be of much help.

Ok, so you are doing a whole lot to your system in fast succession, so I worry that whatever the issue has now been compounded. 2 corals are showing this issue, how many do you have that aren't showing these problems?

From what I can see, it is just the polyps bubbling. It may be caused by the same thing, but I'm not seeing the bubbling on the tissues at all. So not sure.

Looks like the polyps are fine to me, they are poking out looking normal from the coralites. The coralites are bubbled up most then some further down too. Looks like hyperplasia to me. I have had it randomly before but I noticed I was always dosing improper amounts of cal. Mag. and alk. when I noticed it show up.
My suggestion would be to make sure your dosing is right and your dosing equal amounts and to watch to make sure it doesn’t spread to other acropora, which it normally doesn’t but can if things in the tank are really stressful to the corals.

There are a lot of references in this thread, but the end answer is the same as my first post - no real answers

I havent really done too much. I dropped the amount of nopox by 25% and have done a few water changes at about 15% each time every 3 days for the last 9 days or so. Otherwise, I havent done anything else yet. I have sent an ICP test out as well. The other weird thing is my other acropora are turning green like the lighting has dropped. But I am running a xr30 gen 4 at 70% over a 60 cube and had it on that for the last 4 months or so.

It is also expanded to 4 other acros.

Yeah, other than water changes and drop in nopox, pretty much what I am doing. They have definitely changed though. Sucks.

Here are some more pics of the other odd thing happening. Almost all of my acropora are turning green. Most are turning green from the bottom of the polyps up. While others the skeleton are turning green. My lighting is gen4 ramped up to 70% using a slightly modified AB+ program. So I don't see how it could be not enough light. Up until a couple weeks ago, my colors were great.

As you can see, some are bubbling as well. The one acro that is doing just fine is my walt disney funny enough. But the rest seem to have some impact from this. I sent out an ICP test so hoping to know more by end of week or early next week. Anyone else think I should maybe get a par meter to see if my radion is not putting out the light it should be?

I just had this very strange occurrence, exactly like the pictures. It's only on two pieces now, but really strange. I was out of town, so the neighbor fed the tank, Po4 went down to .02 (normally around .08), then a few days ago my ATO dumped about 15 gallons (in a 250 gallon system), but salinity wasn't really changed. I've been feeding more heavily to get nutrients back up, but other than general cleaning of the small sand bed and pumps/gyres, I haven't really made any changes. If anything I've been very studious about catching up with maintenance after being gone for a few days. Running a Calcium reactor, which has been online for about 2 months now. Alk is steady around 8.1-8.3 with daily checks. Calcium has been steady around 450 in the past week. Polyp extension is way down across the tank, and one looks exactly like the above. I do carbon dose, but it hasn't changed recently.

I was never able to definitely say what caused this. I did find some articles out there on wild acropora and what may cause it. I'd do some searching around that, as I cannot remember where I found it. But nothing about it in aquariums. Over time, it just went away. Some grew over the bubble making it hard as well. Very odd. Good luck!

Hey sir I’m having the same issue now, do you remember how long exactly it took for this problem to go away? Also did you change any of the things you were doing or? Did you have any soft/leather corals? Could it maybe have been allopathy? It’s driving me mad tho that I can’t figure it out.

The bubbles look very much like when we dip zoas in higher than normal percentages of hydrogen peroxide. It could be a localized excess of photosynthesis producing too much oxygen inside of the tissue in combination with chemistry instability outside of the tissue, as in for wrong dosages of Ca, Alk and Mg off the limits, or without proper balance. One more thing that would adjust as time goes by. I think if it was bacterial infection it would damage the coral to the point of a loss. It's more like a built up of gases to me. I've seen similar happening in Pocillopora verrucosa in nature, but it's very rare to find that in the ocean. Very interesting! Please continue posting as the corals gets better.

Any updates as to what causes it?

Never found out what caused it, but after moving my tank to a new home, using all new water, and stopped carbon dosing/aminos, the bubbles are gone. Don’t see any forming on new growth.

I would give an infected frag to a buddy in the past and it would recover in a months time. Seeing this quick recovery kept me hopeful that a tank reset, and no carbon source to fuel any sort of bacterial growth would be the answer.

I reckon it’s just generalised stress, I changed some bulbs out on my T5 and some Acropora flared up with puffy polyps. I did also know that my calc had run out and was dosing uneven for a few days, which also correlates.

Potential that the protein skimmer wasn’t running as efficiently either, potentially leaving too much crap in the water (no pun intended).

It has to be either one of these things, or all of them, most likely the latter.

I can correlate my explosion of bubbles to when i changed out my bulbs.

Please tell me you did nothing else :face-with-tears-of-joy::face-with-tears-of-joy:

Every single acro this is happening to in my tank have also been heavily aquacultured. The ones which aren’t doing it are fine.

the quartz sleeve on my UV is constantly calcifying, so my flare up could correlate as to when the UV started to become less effective.

If the polyps are tuliping, it has to be because of an irritant in the water, as the highest surface area of the polyp is at the tips, so they’re “puckering” to reduce damage to the tip of the tentacle on the polyp. But what can cause that irritation?

Potentially an oxidative compound in the water? I’m not running carbon, potentially a bacteria? I’ve cleaned my UV

I’ll revisit this in a week or so and see if anything improves.
