Acrylic Rod Ever Cut Rod in Tank?

Hi All......

I have a question about the acrylic rod holding up the rock in my reef tank. I have one rock structure that I want to make shorter. My question is has anyone cut acyrlic rod while still in the tank? If so, how did you do it.....

Can’t say I have. But I have cut it outside and the little cuttings get everywhere. I can’t imagine that would be good if you have a cuc or worse a sand sifting fish.

Ya, I agree. In hindsight, I should have rethought what I did! I really don't want to remove the base & acrylic rod, but I don't see another option at this point.
I was hoping a reefing god may have come up with an idea..

Depending on how thick it is, could you just use bone cutters?

Just might work.... I'll get a pair from somewhere, my kid is a dentist, he might have something similar.

The tube cutters might have an oil of some type , kinda worried about that.

Well, I finally got up the courage to attempt to cut the 1/4 inch acrylic rods that are holding up some of my taller coral rock structures in my tank. I used an old pair of Vise-Grips that I cleaned up with brushes and very hot water, soaking them for several hours, scrubbing. The Vise-Grips came very clean, no oil residue remaining. Two or three snips around the rod and they broke off pretty cleanly. Very happy with the results. It's been a week or so since I did it, seemingly no problems with anything coming off the Vise-Grips. I would do it again if I needed to.
