Activated carbon causing HLLE has been proven, disproven, bunked and debunked so many times that I no longer believe anyone has a clue. I have been keeping marine fish (especially tangs) off and on for 25 years. I have always run carbon, and I have only had one case of HLLE. Could carbon be a contributing factor? Sure. If you run carbon will you cause HLLE in your surgeon fish? Not likely. Just my opinion and my experience.

Can't agree with this more....

I've run carbon 24/7 in all my tanks, never had a single case of HLLE until now. Kept many tangs and other types of fish.
