So, one of my peppermint shrimp decided it was a good idea to start eating my Hammer Coral. Not cool. Out of the tank he goes. My problem is: what to do with him? My main nutrient export system is ZEOvit, so I did not get a sump with a refugium. Now, I'm thinking a refugium would be the perfect place to put the rogue shrimp.

1) What are some plumbing techniques people use to good effect for having an "external" refugium? It would probably be on the end table next to my DT.

2) Would the ZEOvit system (given the ULN environment it creates) prevent Chaeto from growing? Would it even work?

What are your thoughts?

I can't speak much for the ZEOvit system, but you can check out my 150g SPS thread to see how I plumbed an external refugium (husker-150g-peninsula-display-refugium.308800). I have my main 150 gallon display and a 55 gallon display refugium both drain into a 75 gallon sump. A single return pump is split to return water to both the 150g and the 55g displays. It works pretty well.

Yes your low nutrient environment will slow, possibly substantially, the growth of any plant but shouldnt kill it.

If anything (and I am no expert on the zeovit system), the large refugium may render the zeovit unnecessary despite similar outcomes.

Find a local reefer, or lfs. Or , start a nano!
