What do you think about me adding an achilles tang to my 180 gallon tank?

I have a powder blue, yellow tang, purple tang and a kole tang right now. I really want one as its my favorite fish but obviously dont wanna stress it out. I am adding more rock for sleeping spots. I do have a FOWLR tang in case they do fight I could move it to but I want to keep this achilles in my reef tank.

I feed flakes 4 times a day, frozen food at least three times a day and some nori everyday.

IF you dont think I should get one, please explain why.

No. Powder blue and Achilles usually do not get along. Not to mention you have enough tangs for a 180.

Thanks for the response!!

4 tangs for a 180, I don't think is that many and have no aggression at all. Maybe when theyre 6 inches + I will have problems but that is years away at this point. Then I will transfer them to my 8 foot tank.

6 tangs in a large tank get along better than just 2 in the same tank. No one gets to own the tank or be the boss when there are 6. Seen it time and time again.

+1 The powder blue will very likely be an issue. I wouldn't risk it.

Thanks for the response

I currently have a 180 with a blonde naso, kole, purple, powder blue and Achilles. I added the PB and Achillies last and together. Both have been in there for just under a year.

How have they been together? I would assume chasing around every once in awhile but anything worse then that?

I was thinking the same as long as you have enough sleeping spots

I said no because you have a current PBT. That's going to end very, very badly.

They can be kept together if added at the same time and properly quarantined. If you didn't treat your fish and quarantine them properly with copper or CP (all of them) then you'll know within a week or two afteryou add the Achilles -- its ten times the disease magnet with 1/5 the hardiness of the powder blue -- which is all but impossible to keep in "ich management" tanks as it is. Food for thought. I kept PBT and Achilles fine together in a 180, but true that they would prefer larger.

Greatly appreciate the response. I would QT the achilles, but since I already have the PBT and its been established in this tank for 6 months you think it wouldnt work out?

I just figured that since it is a large size tank and with multiple sleeping spots and other large fish that they wouldnt fight too much.

Oh that PBT will single out the Achilles like nobody's business. If you replaced that PBT and added the new PBT and Achilles and qt'd them with say another acanthurus tang you might be OK. Maybe a goldrim or powder brown?

So you are saying add three acanthurus or the 2 will fight till one dies?

Could also look into adding a clown tang.

It's more likely, yes. The existing PBT will have to go either way. Just an Achilles and new PBT may work but it's risky.

leaning towards not doing it then. especially since I dont wanna get rid of the current PBT had him for a couple years through a couple moves.

What about adding a male blue throat trigger instead? That shouldnt have an aggression to the tangs would it and they wouldnt attack that right?

I wanna add another large fish in the tank.

Incorporate an acclimation box. Keep your new fish in it for 3-5 days. This way, whatever aggression your existing fish may want to take out on the new guy will happen in a safe manner. After a few days your existing fish tend to calm down and your new addition isn't all that new to them.

That could work well-- but PBT are very aggressive and could reject nearly any addition. This one is far more likely to work in your favor, however.

Large social acclimation box is huge friend on this one!

Add the trigger, I did a sargassum and then another two weeks later and resident fish didn't even blink.

You should be fine i have 15 tangs in my 400. If u go with triggers get crosshatch trigers!

I think the odds of an ich outbreak are too high to add an Achilles Tang. I have a Blue Throat Trigger in my 120-along with a hippo and yellow tang-and I would highly recommend adding one, or even a pair. What about adding the BTT-or pair- and a nice Foxface? I intend on adding one shortly.
