Add on refugium

I have a 180 gallon tank and want to add on 40 gallon refugium. Has anyone ever build a refugium on to their system? I been having a GHA problem so about a month or two and don't think my reactor is doing the job. Any ideas.? If you have one I would love to see a picture of it! Thanks for the help in advance
