I have a barebottom AIO thats been running 1 year. i am moving 2 hours in 3 weeks and am debating adding sand after my tank move.

reasons i want to add: i want some fish and inverts that enjoy sand.

reasons i dont want to: i keep reading barebottom are better after the one year mark.

thoughts?

Do it.

Easy to do. For sure add it but do it a special way that allows for removal: pre rinse your sand with tap to 100% cloudless state. Final rinse in ro, now you’re adding snowglobe type grains that never cloud and you can remove that too, anytime

do not add any unrinsed sand no matter the nine ways you may justify doing so, such as fear of bacteria loss. Your tank is obviously fine without the bac, so adding them and subtracting is still evened out, it’s not a negation when it’s time to remove the sand

choose cloudlessness and it’ll work. Have zero concerns over bac, and total concern over clouding, and this will work as you planned. You would specifically pre rinse any dry sand, or any wet sand you’d buy.
