Here’s the mechanical filtration set up. A cup with a bunch of squares and holes and a big piece of floss CD002364-249D-4197-8434-4834C476462A.png 0A1EDFEE-C14F-4BC0-A0FB-AA393A9BD0FC.png

Hey Miami, you joined on my birthday last year.
That cup has too much turbulance for the floss to be effective according to your results. Maybe a larger cup or floss in another location away from the turbulance or a filter sock could do the trick?

Did you wash/rinse your gravel like Brandon recommends?

Hmm ok I’ll see. Yeah this cup is even bigger than the one I originally used last night.

The tanks a year old so no I didn’t wash any gravel that I used. Was using hob gear prior to last night. Do you think getting a filter sock attachment will be better?

Yes, but it sounds like you have a lot more water motion with a sump and that could be kicking up the fines in your gravel? Taking it out and rinsing it may help avoid lots of issues going forward>

Read the Brandon threads for useful information!

Thanks, Will check it out. I don’t have more flow tbh. I had a seachem tidal 110 and an aquaclear 70 with a wave maker, I’ve had to add a second wavemaker to make up for the loss of flow. I also thought it was fine particles being kicked up

Cool, adding flow into a sump is a great way to export stuff, and yes a sock is the best way to collect it imo. The snad rinse thread covers the chronic issue of fines in the aquarium. Rinsing is easy it you have driveway!
