Adding 2nd clownfish

So I have a clownfish in my 20 gallon. I’ve had this clownfish for almost a year now. We used to have another clownfish however she died a few months ago. I’m planning on getting another clownfish however I’m thinking of getting a juvenile/baby clownfish. Is this okay? Will my existing clownfish abuse the juvenile?

No I did this in my 29 gallon. He might beat the **** out of him for a little but they will get over it. My old clown went right to my new one to protect it from my wrasse. Getting a smaller one is better then larger

It’s really hit or miss! Getting a different size will help but since they aren’t paired some aggression/territorial behavior is to be assumed. Some will bully or kill each other that is unfortunately normal behavior others will be fine. But since you’ve had one for awhile and he’s been living alone for a few months I wouldn’t risk it. I’d get a different type of fish instead. If you do get one though introducing them slowly like adding the new one to an isolation box for a bit can help get them used to each other. Also this isn’t an emergency. I know people abuse it lol.

I would get a smaller younger clown as long as it is an ocellaris clown and not a maroon. All clownfish are born male and the dominant clownfish changes into a female. Once the dominance is established the aggression usually settles. If your current fish has changed to a female and you happen to buy one that is female they will most likely fight to the death.

It could go either way, there’s not really a way to ‘predict‘ what will happen!

I have been in a similar situation and i did buy a juvenile and added it with my dominant female clown fish in a 45 gallon tank. After a couple of days wit’s various levels of aggression it all settled down nicely.

Just get a clown of the same variety as the one you already have and hopefully you should be okay!
