This is my thought process so far... I've run out of room very quickly under my display tank and at this point want to add a Doser and an auto top off. My solution to the space issue is placing a cabinet next to my DT stand. And why not have a tank on that cabinet? What should I put in that tank? I don't really need nutrient export (and don't really expect much from a refugium), in fact I think my DT was too clean so I'm feeding more and corals, and fish , are happier. So this refugium would be just that, a refuge for pods ( would love a mandarin and red scooter blenny in DT) and perhaps an aggressive type fish, something I can't put into my mixed reef/peaceful DT, and some really pretty macro algaes.
I've found at Petsmart a Marineland glass 27? gallon cube tank stand, glass lids and led light (which probably won't be enough light for the plants, and I would probably build screens for the top) for $199.99. I like the size/dimensions as it should fit nicely beside my 90 gallon reef. I can envision pretty much everything except the plumbing (I'm a newb and I bought my DT used with plumbing included, nothing fancy I believe, in fact I don't really even know what my DT overflow/return setup might be called, to be honest). I think I would want my refugium to drain into the return section of my DT's sump, and the return hose (might have to switch to PVC? And how difficult might that be?) T'd with gate valves to control flow into either tank. And if power was cut off, how much more would drain into the sump? It can handle a few more gallons. Would I want to drill a drain into the back of the 27? (Have never drilled glass before.) And where would the return come in?
Sooo many questions! Is it doable or wise? Am I missing something pivotal? Let me know! Thank you!
