I was at Hobby Lobby the other day and saw these colored glass bottles and thought that these could make an interesting display in the reef and not to mention a perfect little home for a blenny or goby. Though I'd share some pics.

Only a true hobbyist looks at pretty glass and sees its aquatic potential :)

That just got me thinking...if you could use that mica powder stuff like on Tanked (it makes stuff look metallic) you could make doubloons and necklaces and such, add a bottle or two, and you have sunken pirate treasure in your reef!

Might just have to look into doing that, lol! I was considering calling my 100g the "treasure chest" anyway!

LOL.!!.....Im attracted to colorful things. I think It could look cool once coralline and other things start to make it a part of the habitat.

Yeah, it would have to "age" a little. ..but doesn't everything in this hobby? XD

My only concern would be that the water in it may become stagnant and be a breeding place for unwanted bacteria. If I were to do that in my tank, I would probably break or cut off the bottom first to allow water to flow through. I would then back it up to the rocks and hide the broken off part. It will eventually become part of the rockscape, a nice little cave with some water ventilation.

If you do, sand off the sharp edges.

Great idea! Open the bottom put it through some rocks and make a tunnel under the rocks. Going to try this one

I tried breaking the bottom off a glass coke bottle. It shattered EVERYWHERE. Unless you wana glue 90% of the bottle back together like I am, I think drilling it a few times would be a better solution lol. That is assuming glass bottles aren't tempered.
There's a sticky on here in the DIY section where a bloke makes his own broken bottle ornaments. It's where I got the idea from. They look awesome!
Edit: that's the link posted above lol.

I havent tried it myself yet. But i saw on somewhere online some simple instructions how to remove the top or bottom of a glass bottle without cutting it. Basically it goes like this. You get some cotton string. tie it around the bottle where you would like the opening to be. Soak the string with lighter fluid. Light the the fluid let it burn for about a min or so to get the glass hot. Then pour cold water over the string. And snap the bottle will break off along the string line. Take a emory board and smooth out the edge. And presto a perfect cut. Im planning on trying it soon. Just thought i would share.

Here is how you remove the bottom of the glass bottle, looks easy enough.

I've been rocking a derelict beer bottle with anemones and macro algae growing on it that was sent to me with and octopus inside it (since the octo wouldn't come out) for a while in my coldwater tanks :)

They make a pretty interesting addition especially if they are covered with life like this coldwater barnacle covered bottle:
