Hey guys!

Over the past couple of months I have been really wanting to add a naso tang to my established tank, I think that they are just really beautiful and it’ll make a great addition. I currently have these fish in my tank now:

3 blue green chromis
1 coricola butterfly
1 four eye butterfly
1 Koran Angel
1 bicolor Angel
2 Maine Mocha clowns
2 maroon clowns
1 lawnmower blenny
1 scopas tang
1 Asst tang
1 yellow tang
2 blue hippo tangs
1 gold rim tang

Do you guys think it can be possible for me to add a naso tang to my tank? I have a 400 gallon fish only tank

I was under the impression that they would be aggressive or the other tangs would be aggressive once a new one was introduced to an established system?

Which naso do you mean? Either way, likely to be ignored by the other fish.
I believe it is also called the lipstick tang. I want to add this one to my tank

It does depend a bit of relative size of course, but fish in the naso genus are generally tolerated by other tangs. May get a bit of initial hazing.

Hello,

The only fish I would be concerned about would be the yellow tang. Generally they are last, because they are aggressive. I have seen some yellow tangs as friendly as butterflies, yet I have also seen some pretty mean and nasty ones. I doubt the other fish would give it much of s hassle, as well.

How long have you had the yellow tang and how large is it? I added my purple tang last and he is super super nice, but when I had my yellow (same as the purple species), it was one of the smallest fish and by far the king of the tank.

I got the yellow tang about 1 month and a half ago.. it’s relatively new to my established tank because I had it in quarantine for about 5 weeks. It is about 3 1/2 inches.

The naso that I plan on getting is about 3 1/2 to 4 inches.. all my other fish are about the same size, maybe a little bit smaller.

I think you'll be fine based on tank size. I'd only be concerned with aggression from the Gold Rim and perhaps the Koran but don't think it will last provided ample rockwork. Note-- I'm not familiar with an Asst tang.

A trick use here in Sweden when you add a new fish that can be bulled by other aggressive fish is to mount a mirror on the outside of one corner. this have saved many fishes during the introduction.

Social acclimation box would be useful.
A good trick too - I normally have my newcomer in my fuge for a week or two. It will make them to smell the same as the other fishes.

Keeping aggressive Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids have taught me that lesson. In these cases - we use net cages in the DT.

Sincerely Lasse

I don't see an issue . I would be definitely worried if you had an Achilles or clown tang .On a side note - clown tangs are probably the jerkiest ( if that's a word) of all . I saw over the weekend how it terrorised even an emperor twice it's size in a 600 gallon.

The Asst tang was given to me and I’m not really familiar with it either.. I have a picture.. I’ve been looking it up and no results.. can you tell what kind it is by looking at it??

I’m at work right now so I’ll have it when I get home. And by the way, I just asked my dad about it and turns out that Asst Tang stands for Assorted Tang, and I guess it’s a hybrid, but he’s not sure of which.

"Assorted Tang" basically means that your LFS has no idea, doesn't feel like looking it up, and is guessing.

With R2R as your field guide, your guess is probably better than theirs - still, if you can get that photo of all his fins in full glory . . .
