I know clowns can be very territorial and dominate to others, also that they are normally added in pairs and do great together, however when I finally got my clown(was set on him and the other while my tank was cycling) by time I was ready to get him, his buddy was gone and it was just him in the tank so as much as I wanted a pair, I brought him home.

His tank said he was a percula, but I don't believe he is since his black markings aren't near as dark, my question now is, is he pretty much destined to be alone in the tank, or do you think he would be alright accepting another ocellaris into the tank with him?

Not to hi-jack my own topic, but does anyone use the reef2reef app? I have an iPhone 5 and the last 2 weeks I can't post topics anymore, everytime I try I get something that says tapatalk error 2222 which is really frustrating since I use my phone to browse and post 98% of the time

If u have a qt tank, buy the other clown and put them both there together. Then move them later to he display tank

Add a smaller clown, one that you're sure is not a dominate female and you should be fine.

I have r2r app on iphone 5 and it works perfectly. It used to crash a lot but recent update fixed it. Still crashes occasionally but only like once a week.

I have 6 clowns in my 55 gal. 1 Black ocellaris, 1 snowflake, 1 sadleback and 2 regular orange ocelaris. i wouldnt suggest keeping an odd number and keep them about the same size and you should be fine.

OK, first off, to OP, yes, you absolutely can pair and either an occ or a perc will work, just go very small, and intro in specimen container.
2nd, yeah that was a terrible hijack!!!
3rd NO, you can NOT have more than one pair long term, odd or even, geez...

As stated, add a juvenile and you will be fine. the risk with adding an adult would be to have 2 of the same sex. With the juvenile that's not already sexed it will turn into a male or female depending on what you already have.

I also believe it is possible to have a harem of clowns. But this is probably best left to someone with lots of experience.

The only way to have a harem is to have babies from a pair from the same clutch, and the parents badger them to keep them from sexing.
You can see the vid on this on BRS video or see the thread on Moberts 27 clowns
This does happen in the wild.
Adding clowns in any other way will end up w/ a pair that matures and womps on everyone else.

If you have a female and add another female one will live. If you add males they will fight to see who's the dominant male to mate with her. None have to die in this fight but just might. The female will keep other males around just incase the dominant male is not a good guard over the eggs she will kick him out and get the next strongest male in line

If you have two males, one will become a female. The female will only spawn with the dominate male, all other clowns will remain sexually immature until either the dominate females dies or the dominate males dies or is removed.

Thanks everyone! I'm pretty sure I'm just going to keep my one clown, I like it too much to risk putting another one in and having it killed or beat on

Yes and the female is always the largest. Can take as little as 2 weeks to go through a sex change :)

I lost a long post to the tapatalk error as well. So tried to post it using the R2R app and that also gave me a tapatalk error.
