So as the title says I want to run a refugium sump for my Nuvo 40 to run the Triton method. I just need some with deciding on "overflow". What are the opinions on an external overflow box or drilling the Nuvo. If I could I would just buy a 100 gallon tank but I'm stuck in my apartment for the next two years and I don't want to upgrade until I move. Someone help me out!

If you can drill the tank you have, I think you'll be so much happier in the long run. Just make sure the glass isn't tempered. That way all the plumbing is hidden and the display tank looks great. Good luck!

I decided to a a sump to my AIO ( is a AIO) after I filled it so I went with a overflow

You have a AIO tank unless you remove the false back it isn’t a good idea to drill it as most water will stay in the false back
Use a overflow I did with my JB AIO tank

My 12g nanocube can't be drilled because the back glass is tempered.

I understand that, I want to know what is the best option. Drilled or an overflow

First and most important question is, is the tank currently being used?

Yup!
But my issue is with an external box, will I have to deal with the siphon breaking every time I turn off my return?

Well to be honest HoB is your only option (I had one for two years with no issues, still have it laying around), trying to drill a stocked tank is just asking for trouble and will almost certainly end up going south

I added a sump to my Red Sea max 130. I did a ton of research on overflow boxes before I chose one. I ended up going with the Life Reef overflow box and I love it. It is designed so that the siphone won’t break when the power shuts off. When power goes back on siphon automatically restarts. Great product.
