I have a pretty well established tank with bunch of soft corals and few fishes (75 G). I have about 100 lb live rocks but have about 20 lbs sand. Its a thin layer across the tank surface. I am thinking about adding another 25/50 lbs live sand. Can I just add it in there without screwing up the chemistry there?
What do i need to be careful about? Do i need to add sand?

You can add sand if you want it. A shallow sand bed is fine. I ran my tanks for years with about an inch of sand, and occasionally added some. Assuming you are adding quality live sand, it should not mess up anything in your tank, but it probably will severely cloud your tank for a couple of days. Corals and fish do not seem to mind.

Here's how to add it without making a mess of your tank. Take a piece of pipe (I use 1 1/2) and cut it a little longer then the depth of your tank. Place it in you tank all the way down to your sand. Put a funnel in the top and carefully fill the pipe with sand. Slightly lift the pipe and move it around as you deposit the sand on the bottom. Repeat until done. That's it!

Your parameters may change slightly. Are you adding it over the top of old sand. If so that will change things. Use a piece of PVC piping to set your new sand where you want it placed.

Great tip and it will keep tank from clouding up so much.

You can also add it a ziploc a time slowly pouring it out once you open the bag at the bottom of the tank.
