Hi,
I'm using a 40g breeder as sump/fuge. This was DIY by someone I bought used. It is working great, but the way it was built, the water enters the skimmer compartment over a baffle on top, and exits the same compartment on top. This causes the water to flow only across the top, while the skimmer is skimming the stagnant (yet well skimmed) water on the bottom. I put a small pond pump on the bottom facing up to circulate which seems to work fine, but I would like to add another baffle so that water enters bottom of compartment, but I would like to do it without draining the sump. Any Ideas on how to do this?

Also, if i can add another baffle, I would like to fit a screen of some sort in the downflow before last baffle to catch the bits of chaeto that sometimes (especcially when thinning) flows through and gets in my skimmer impeller. can vinyl window screening be used?

Thanks for any advice

I wouldn't add screen or anything to the baffle as that will clog easily and cause problems.

As for adding a baffle you could try to wedge something in there and secure with reef puddy but I'm not confident it would last indefinitely. Draining is obviously your best bet. Fwiw 40b tanks and scrap glass are dirt cheap so if your not happy with your set up maybe you can just make a new one exactly how you want it and swap them?
