My tank just finished its cycle last week. I want to get started on adding copepods in the hopes of adding a mandarin in the future. How long do I need to wait to start seeding the tank? I would imagine it's too early to start now.

You don't have to wait. You could do it now. Do you have a refugium? Some place safe for the pods to multiply? I finally just got my first mandarin after having the refugium up and running for over a year to ensure there would be enough of a continuous supply of pods for the fish to eat.

yes, I have everything ready...just wanted to wait to make sure the pod population was able to culture.

Then you are good to go. Add some pods to the fuge, wait a month and add some more. That's what I did. Chances are, if you used live rock, you already have some in your tank. They survive the cycle process quite easily.

As long as there are no predators, the population will explode in no time. I had a 29g tank with only corals and that pod population exploded. However, mandys do eat LOTS of pods daily so they cleaned that tank up in a matter of a week.

So, I went ahead and purchased the starter pack from algae barn which includes the pods, phyto, turbo start and the ceramic cubes for the refugium. My tank is already cycled. Adding a little of the turbo start would not be a bad idea, correct? I have some fish and a small zoa frag in there now as well as a few hermit crabs and 2 snails. Adding the turbo start will just boost the beneficial bacteria in my tank, correct?

We always just suggest that your tank doesnt have and swings to add the pods :) ~Shaun K

Okay, thanks. I was researching the turbostart and I won't be adding that. How long is that good for?
