I have a friend that had some live rock laying around for 6 months that was in his tank for a while. I also got a piece that he took out of his system last week. I just started a completely dry system and I'm at the end of the cycle. Should I add the rock to my system directly? When i got home i put all the rock in saltwater inside a bucket with a closed top and power head. The piece of rock that came out of his tank last week has some dried mushrooms that im not a big fan of but other than that his tank is clean. He hasn't had any bad hitchhikers, Aptasia (knock on wood) or anything like that. Im debating putting the rock in my tank. My system is a reefer 250(65 gallons) with 40 lbs live rock, marine pure block in the sump, 30lbs reef flakes, and just finished its initial cycle. There are 2 Chromis and 4 Nassarius snails in the tank. I would like to add the rock to the system and Im not worried about it causing a cycle, but i am worried about it having some type of negative effect on the system. Should i add the rock to the system, vinegar or acid dip it or cook it in the closed bucket for a couple weeks?

thanks,

Let's see pics of it

Whenever it's a large quantity I'm used to scrub it and place it on the bucket for at least 2 months changing water regularly.
If it's just a small stone I scrub and send it to the sump for 3-4 weeks while testing the water. What usually happens (just my experience) it's a NO3 and/or PO4 rise.

may I ask why you want to add the rock in the 1st place? what is your goal here?
do you feel you need more for the scape or just adding it to the sump?

I would guess it will restart you cycle, not a bad thing could be good for the tank. personally if it came from a tank and you started out with all dry rock I would cure it 1st. those shrooms even tho there dried would release po4 no3 in to the system. or might even re-sprout.

I will need more for aquqscape eventually. For now I don't so I think I'm just going to leave the rock in the covered bucket with a powerhead. It already is smelling really bad so I'm guessing something is dieing off.
