Hey guys,

Quick question....If I add dry sand to a 1 year old established tank, would I be able to avoid getting cyano and algae growth on the sand or would it require the same amount of vacuuming and stirring as a sandbed that was set up from the start?

Thanks

You might not get cyano or algae growth if that sand is clean. What you prob will get is a diatom bloom.

I add old dry sand from a past tear down to my 135Gal. I add 2 cups here and 3 cups there. No cyano or any probs when I’ve done it. Has less to do with the sand you add and more to do with the health and existing bio-balance in your system if you ask me.

Yeah, assuming my biofiltration is amazing I was hoping to get away with a nice white sandbed with as little work as possible
