Does anyone add fertilizer halfway through their phytoplankton culture?

I use 7-10 day cycles, Tetraselmis, F2 @ 1ml/liter, 16/8 photoperiod (10k LED) @ 70F.

I use modified F2 from Mercer of Montana at 1ml/L, except I tripled the dosage and harvest 4L every other day.

I also quadrupled light source and run 24/7. Extra heat required a fan to cool culture down to 79 degrees.

i never add fert halfway through. I use guillards, the instruction is .5 ml per litre, but i always put about double that, so about 2 ml in my 2 littre bottle. In 5-6 days my stuff is dark green and put it in the fridge.

Why does everyone increase fert doseage? The recommended dose is such for a reason, studies were done to prove this is the optimal dose. If you have to add more, it's probably because you are growing something else besides the phyto.

I split my culture after 6-7 days and do not add fert. I have added fert after 7 days to prevent a crash if I'm busy or just being lazy. The culture gets a little darker in the 2nd week but growth slows alot and it's probably not as good. Phyto is most nutricious during the exponential growth phase.

Bumping this for knowledge. Starter culture always does great and even after I split it I usually got a good second yield but that third split has killed my last two disks. Any tips on why I crash after 2 splits? Typically crashes about 4 days after the 2nd split.

Maybe contamination. How are you cleanimg between splits?

I usually bleach everything, at most go 1 split between sanitizations or bacterial contamination can get really bad.

Bleach usually for bottles and rigid tubing but this most recent split I didn't boil the water to sterilize it. Instead I cleaned out the bucket and wiped it with bleach and waited 24 hours. I am wondering if I still had bleach in the bottles or if its something else. Restarted the cultures tonight with what I harvested Friday. Still have 1 culture that was going strong so I left that one and just restarted the other three.

Scratching my head on contamination issues as if the other three were killed off, why not the first?
