For those who make they own fish food.

Do you add garlic(NOT THE LIQUID) to your mix ?
And if so do you know the pros/cons when it come to the fishes ? Or are you just doing it cause someone said so ?

Thank you in advance.

ONELOVE.

I add minced garlic to my food to attract the fish. I've seen so many studies saying it helps build defences and just about the same number stating it does nothing. But even if it doesn't help with the immune system, it still attracts them to the food and they find every bit I put in the tank.

Anyone else read about long term garlic usage being bad for their livers?

I’ve had luck enticing fish to eat with garlic. Most recently with a very challenging flagfin angel, garlic was one of the only things it would show any interest in.

Most studies I’ve seen evaluate dosing highly concentrated garlic extract.

In that sense, chopped garlic in food probably wouldn’t directly apply as you’d need to feed very large quantities.

I never used garlic and my fish never need enticing to eat. I wish they would go on a diet once in a while.

I minced up some garlic and put in a sealed container with RODI water, then i add about 1 or 2 drops to my food when defrosting.

i smash mine on the cutting board, then grind it with the back of the knife to a pulp/paste and then throw it with all my stuff into a food processor with a bit of RO/DI water....

after the food processor it goes into freezer bags frozen flat so i can break off pieces about the diameter of a quarter and twice as thick as a quarter....

i hear that flukes and ich dont like the garlic...... i dont get bit by mosquitoes much either cause i eat what most people consider too much garlic...

Eat too much garlic? Is that possible?

Is garlic suggested due to a taste preference, or for its antiseptic properties? I remember doing some antiviral and antibacterial experiments with garlic in one of my chem classes in college. I'm guessing this property is why its suggested?

I’m trying to find out if it benefits them in any way or if it’s just another reef tail. I have heard people say that when they eat it some kind of oil or smell comes out of there gills and that helps them fight ich cause the ich don’t like the smell or taste. True or not I don’t know that’s why I’m trying to see what others do and why.

I do know that the antiseptic properties of uncooked garlic is well documented. It will kill numerous pathogens, allicin (from what I remember, just as effective as penecillin in our experiments) is produced upon garlic being mechanically chopped/cut/sliced, and is the byproduct of the natural defense system of the plant. Highly unstable, meaning it doesn't last long (like a half a day if I remember correctly).

That pretty much means that anyone putting garlic in their food for the antiseptic properties is wasting their time if it isn't used within 24hrs.
You only get that benefit from fresh cut garlic, for a limited time.
I can look up the specifics as I changed majors and am not active in the natural sciences any longer.. but maybe if I ever have kids it'll come in handy-ha.

Who's the resident chemist on here?

Will Garlic Extream help boost my fishes immune system or is that product just to make the food taste better?

I've recently had experience with adding garlic to my food. My new Twelve Line Wrasse would not eat, so I added a clove of garlic to the cup which I keep my thawed mysis shrimp in. It absolutely did the trick and now I no longer add the garlic to the food.

Side note, adding garlic to water and setting it in the fridge made for a large wiff of garlic throughout the kitchen/living room when the fridge was opened.

Yes, Its a strong smell lol. I got the Garlic xtreme. I keep it in the bottle then in the case then in my refrig. lol. I just want to make sure it's helping the fish vs. just making the food taste better.
Dr Foster saids it Naturally strengthen your fishes' resistance to parasites, fungi, and bacteria but the manufacture sells it as food enhancement. Thats what I see on the bottle
