Adding height to canopy questions

Looking to add about 6 inches to the top of my canopy. My plan is to try and take the top part off and add the 6 inches to the sides. My question is what wood would be best for this and what would be the best way to hold it in place. Would just gluing it be enough or should I add brackets? I plan on adding wood filler in the gap between the old side and new side pieces once done. Adding pictures of the canopy and what the wood looks like. Thanks!

hi ,i don't think glue will be enough,unless drilling and adding dowel pins,poss add strip of wood to joints 1x4??

I know this sounds crazy...but...JB Weld and long LEGO strips. Then you can raise or lower when you need to.

If I understand correctly, you're wasting to add 6" of vertical to the hood/cannopy?

Your existing canopy is made from painted plywood, and Marine grade ply is the only readily available material I would use of attempting this.

Wood glue isn't really an option here. The plywood is already painted and edge glue joints on plywood are extremely weak. Reinforcing the joint will definitely need done.

After going through all the options in my head, I honestly believe adding a piece to raise the height is a mistake. If you need additional height, deconstruct the hood and replace the vertical pieces with replacement panels 6" taller. Everything else will be a lot more work, and end up with an inferior product.

I liked the way the bottom of the canopy looked so I ended up adding 6 inches to the top and used wood supports and brad staples to keep everything together. I made the whole front open up where it didn’t before which has made accessing everything way easier. Then I filled in the seems between the two boards with wood filler.
