Adding item which has not been made specifically for an aquarium.

Hello all, I’m upgrading from my 65 FOWLR to a 120 in the next couple months, pending cycling time. I am interested in adding a piece to my scape that isn’t some specifically made for an aquarium. Is there an easy way to make it saltwater safe?

Welcome to R2R! Honestly I wouldnt risk it. There are coatings you can put on stuff, but better tone safe and have a healthy system

Welcome to R2R... could you maybe explain a little more.. like what it's made of .... Or Covered With.. Saltwater is very damaging to some surfaces.

If it will leach any substance- don't do it. Epoxy and resin coated seems best and safest

Welcome to R2R!!! I am sure it will need to be coated so it doesn't leach into the tank, just not sure with what.

Welcome to R2R. What exactly are you thinking of putting in? Reminds me of the old days when I put some empty beer bottles inside my tank. It actually did not look that bad haha.

Welcome to R2R!!! Some items like PVC are aquarium safe even though they are not specifically designed for an aquarium, but many materials can get tore up by saltwater fairly quickly and, more concerning, some items can leach things into the tank that may be harmful to your fish and corals.

I have a Wisconsin Badgers themed basement with a bunch of memorabilia and this is where the new tank is going. I thought it would be fun to include something like these guys in the tank but unsure how to make it safe. They’re made out of plastic. I’m leaning more towards the badger than the gnome haha.

Well hello fellow badger/cheesehead! I would display them next to the tank rather than in the tank

I have white cabinet doors, which are glass, and I am leaning towards adding the forever forward logo on them made from the cricut.

Yeah I’d say outside the tank, but if you really want to put them in the tank, get some glass or acrylic, build a box and seal the badger in there! That’s the only way I can think of, as long as it’s completely sealed

you could try curing it in a separate bucket with salt water + powerhead for several months and see if it holds up... the safest thing would be to apply some food grade translucent epoxy to the entire surface of it but that can be expensive. It depends on how much you want to spend. Honestly I wouldn't bother, easier just to put it near the tank instead of inside it
