Adding Live Rock to a 2 year old aquarium

Hello all,

I’m sort of confused on if I’m able to do this or not. I just rescaped my tank and noticed I need a few pieces to achieve the look I’m going for. With that being said, my question is… Can I add more rock to my aquarium without causing a mini cycle? I’m trying to avoid that issue.

I currently have Real Reef Rock.

What do you mean by live rock? Where are you getting it?

I was going to purchase some from someone with an established tank. I known them for a while and I’m fairly positive they don’t have any bad pest

The rock if just moved right away into the tank should be fine.

If the rock is wet live rock, then its fine, you can add as much as you like and it will do nothing to your system.

If the rock is dry, then I would only add 10% more rock at a time, they will cycle and mess with the tank parameters.

You will be fine adding a small amount of rock to a established tank.
Even if there is a little die off ( bacteria, algae, etc) of the new rock, the bacteria in the established tank should be able to handle it.
Just keep the new pieces wet. Bucket with a wet towel.
