so over the last year Iv sucked quite a bit of sand out of my tank well cleaning. My lfs guy said live would be the better choice to add to my tank. So what's the best way to go about adding this to my year old reef without messing anything up or creating a giant mess?

Unless this live sand is full of pods, worms, micro brittle stars etc I would pass on it and just use dry sand. Make sure you rinse it thoroughly beforehand though. When your ready to add the sand just use a piece of pvc pipe and a funnel. Piece of cake. GL.

I need to add sand to a 90g but I'm going to just add rinsed sand. 1st rinse in tap water (to get rid of most particles), then RODI water, and the saltwater. Then I will add it one small container at a time.

Add it slowly a little each week during maintenance. If you pile a bunch of new sand on top of the sand you already have you can create anaerobic pockets. A little here a little there each week and you'll have it where you want it.

+1 on the throughly rinsed dry sand.

I cut the bottom of a 2 liter cola bottle .. clean it .keep the lid on Fill it with the sand and you can place the sand anywhere you want letting it trickle out of the narrow neck

its caribsea arga alive, why would it be bad to add live? i planned on rinsing it really well first and its one 20lb bag going into a 125 gallon tank. should i still go a little at a time?

I would think rinsing live sand would remove the bacteria that was in the sand in the first place. That's my thoughts. But +1 on the rinse regular sand.

ever had any problems doing this? and to a year old tank?
3 year old tank actually. and no. I run a DSB. Its recommended to keep adding to it. just avoid fine sand.

I honestly would be more concerned with adding a large amount of uncured sand. Similar to adding large pieces of un cured live rock.

if the water is high in chloramines(tap) possibly. but it would be pretty tough to do to I think, My 14g coral QT is LR and sand. I take it out and rinse it in tap and put it back in with tank water. And my water here is basicly bleach.

You do not rinse live sand.

I do not have any reason as to why not add live sand. It sounds like others do it and don't have any problems.
