I have a visible sump right next to my bed and would like to look at more interesting creatures other than bristle worms, sponges and pods. What are some things you guys add to your sump? There’s not a large opening to escape so I think some sort of crab or something would be cool to have, especially if it can’t stay in my actual display tank.

I mean realistically anything can go in there as long as its large enough not to get sucked into the pump but I mean realistically I doubt it would be an ideal living condition with the crashing water and pump noise running 24/7 for the little guy lol.

Some people use their sump as a temporary holding station until they know what do with with a fish or while they try and sell it. Its hardly a great place to keep a fish or crab long term imo.

If you have a big enough sump, like I have, (Middle chamber is 30”x20”x16”) you can keep fish and small clams. I personally have 2 small (2.5” maximas) and 2 clownfish and a few chocolate chips starfish along with some rubble rock and macro algae.

Currently it’s all live rock that I removed from my display sitting in the sump. I see a lot of little creatures but wasn’t really thinking of fish. Clams are interesting, do they require light? I also haven’t tried clams and are kinda intimidated by them. If they die don’t they nuke the tank?

They are pretty tricky and require a whole bunch of light. I run 2 kessil a360s in my sump just for them.
Your tank has to have very stable parameters and the ability to manage calcium and DKH levels.
