my tank is already established but I think I want to add more rocks. will this re-cycle my tank and ruin everything?

(sorry I couldn't find where to post this so I posted it on the forum with rocks.)

If by dry you mean something like life rock or base rock, you can add that and there should be little to no cycle. If you want to add more live rock, this is also possible, but you should do it in small amounts over a period of time. And watch your levels when doing this.

If you are looking for biodiversity you can go to Indo Pacific Sea Farms and get sand and such from them to raise your diversity.

If you are near the ocean you can also get sand and rock form there to help too.

I would only add established rock. If you purchase dry-rock, I would cycle the rock for many weeks and keep up with the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels...and only when these return and stable to zero before adding to the already established tank.

This would be my approach as well for what it's worth.

Carful with taking sand or rocks from a local beach- depending on where you are it could be illegal.

I’ve added rock before - a little at a time without problems. If you have a large enough tank and you add a piece or two I think you should be fine. If your have a small system and adding a lot of rocks you may see it go they it’s cycle.

hope this helps. Take care

I've added life rock to my estabkished tanks and never had an issue with it causing a spike or cycle at all. Everyone's got an opinion. My advise, do what works best for you.

You are right. But when I added dead, old dried out rock to my tank (many years ago), it caused the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates to spike...killed everything.
