i would like to raise my sand bed a bit, whats a safe way to do this on a well established tank,

I just replied on another thread on this...but can't find it. Here's what you need to do. Get a pipe (PCV) that is a bit longer than the depth of your tank. I use 1 1/2 inch pipe. Place this in your tank all the way to the bottom. Fill the pipe with sand. I use a wide mouth funnel to make filling the pipe easy. Once the pipe is filled, slightly lift the pipe and start moving around to distribute the sand.

Don't do a bunch of sand because it most likely will have a mini cycle. If you wish to add quite a bit, do it over a couple days.

I would recommend adding the sand before you do a water change and only a small amount. The reason that I would do it before the water change is just in case you stir any gook in the existing sand bed.
