I'm going to upgrade to a 180 gal tank from 125. I currently have a PBT, purple tang and sailfin tang. The purple tang is a bit aggressive but I feel hes just defending territory. When I first got the purple tang I had it in QT with the PBT and they never had an issue together and they never messed with each other in the DT. I wanna add a yellow tang and possibly a blue hippo. Do you think if I took them all out and had them in QT or left them in my current 125 and took all the rock out and added it to the 180 build then introduced them all at the same time this would be fine? or do you think that I'm pushing my luck?

I think it can be done, but you are always pushing your luck when adding new tangs! I would try to add them all at once to the 180 if I were you ( I went from a 125 to a 180 gallon 3 years ago ). I would also be sure to add a couple mirrors to curb aggression. Also, you didn’t ask this, it I wish I didn’t get my hippo. They get amazingly big very quickly if fed well. I think mine should be in bigger tank personally.

Good luck!

how many ft is your tank? I used to have 2 hippos in my tank. 1 ended up getting sucked into the HOB filter when in QT and died and the other had something wrong with it and I was trying to medicate it but it ended up passing away.

My tank is the regular 6 ft 180 gallon version. A lot of people have hippos in this size tank, including me. But, if I could do it over, I would probably have added another yellow tang or a kole instead.

The blue will likely not fight, but the yellow for sure. I have a yellow, purple, gem together. They fight a lot, luckily they are hardy tangs. General rule is same body type or the same they become more territorial.

My sailfin and my purple tang are a decent size. Not very small so should I get ones that are grown a little more? I wanted to get smaller ones because I feel like it won't fight as much or would this be a problem because the purple tang will be able to bully the smaller fish and the smaller ones won't be able to defend their selves?

Bully fish will probably be more likely to try to establish dominance and territory with fish closer to their own size.

Since I'm getting a new setup and new tank would it be fine to go with smaller ones? Would this make it so they wouldnt fight? I'm a little confused

I have had a 180g for 6yrs.

STOP at 3 tangs!!! One tang will become dominant and bully the other 3...if you add a 4th

180g 6ft is large enough for 2 submissive tangs to 'get lost' among the rocks.... but remain happy

Adding a 4th tang (1boss+3submissive) will end up in territorial disputes.

>>>>>You end up with 1, maybe 2 tangs submissively hanging in one corner living an unhappy life.

P.S. adding a blue hippo, once its adult size... it will be the boss of the tank, making life unpleasant for any other tangs

Hth
