Hi all, if i wanted to add new rocks to my display tank... should i cycle the rocks first before putting them in the display tank?

Is it Live rock? Dry rock? If your system is already established, you just need to scrub them with a brush to get any loose organics off.

Live rocks or dry rocks?
If dry rocks you can add them with out any problems, just rinse them very well in Ro water or waist salt water from a water change.
If live rocks, then it depends... if they are now in an established tank and just transferred, you can add them with out starting a new cycle. Although you should quarantine them to look for unwanted pest.

This is going to be dry rock. Dont the nitrifying bacteria need to colonize on the new dry rock before?

What if i take out all my all my old rock?

Scrub with brush, rinse with R/O, Then add some bacteria. Even if your tank has the bacteria, I am sure more of it won’t be an issue :) Good luck!

You can add dry rock to the tank without changing anything so long as it is CLEAN. If you don't know where it came from or if it was in another system I would clean it really well with a muriatic acid followed by a bleach bath to remove the locked up phosphates and organics. The alternative to this would be to cycle the rock in a separate container before adding to your display to remove these organics.

I once added dry rock to a tank without cycling. It created an algae explosion; it was a nightmare.

Scrub the rock all you want but you will never get all of the organics off and you will get an algae bloom.

Personally, I would place the rock in a bucket with white vinegar and a circulating pump. let it soak for a day or two. Then thoroughly rinse before using.
