I took out some of my rock about 4 months ago thinking i had too much rock well now i realize i need more. Can i reintroduced it back into my tank? It does have a “dead snail “ smell and i can see dried sponges, asterina stars and chitons.

You can. It is full of organics and can add ammonia as it breaks down, thus also adding to N and P. Most people like to wash them with pressure and then do a quick acid bath to remove some of the outer layer. Go super slow if you are not going to clean it. Go normally slow even if you do.

In any case, you will likely end up with rising P as the rock unbinds it.

I've been doing that exact thing , just take off any dead sponges or what not n pick a place you like it ,the rock, will just go through its own little cycle but it hasn't bother anything else in my tank
