After I add rock into the tank and fill it with water, how long do I have to wait before I add fish...a month?

I should add I’d be getting rock from my LFS wet.

There is no set time. U hv to let the tank go through a cycle. Your looking for 0 ammonia. Once I saw that I would wait a bit more. It will only help for your tank to mature. Then I would get 1 or 2 fish. Let the tank adjust to new bioload. Keep your parameters in check and enjoy the ne critters for awhile.
This is just a few pointers for you. There is much research u should do to understand the cycling process. Happy Reefing!

with fresh I usually quarantine fish, constant testing for a little bit. I just am not sure for salt water

I guess what I’m asking is if the process is the same for saltwater as it is freshwater. Once the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate process then you are good.

In my experience u can add an additive to fresh water and your good. A salt water cycle is a complex thing with many steps

It is the same, the rock will end up being the bulk of your biological filtration. If you started with dry rock it will take some time for the bacteria to populate but if you start with live rock (wet), that already has a bacteria population, it's likely that you won't even see the cycle and your tank will be ready for fish much quicker

I was not sure. The last freshwater I had was 15 years ago. The hobby has come along way since then. They look amazing now and the color and variety of fish is way way better!

As far as wet goes then, I would say if it is fm an active tank the cycling time would be shorter but if it’s just typical wet rock that is ”cycling” in your LFS vat there still will b a cycle. You need the biological component to increase the nitrifying bacteria.
