adding sand/crushed coral to existing tank

i think i've heard that the bags of sand/crushed coral have salt and calcium(i think) in it... my tank is going on 7 years and over the years my sand bed has shrunk from 2-3 inches to about inch 1/2 deep... need to add but wondering how i should go about it.. thoughts ?

my thought was just very slowly adding it in... mayb every week do a handful but thats just my thought.. appreciate any help

I think your thoughts is probably the best way.
