Adding sand to an established tank

Hey reefers so question on adding sand to my tank currently it is a bar bottom and I love it but I do wanna add some inverts and fish that require sand. Much help would be appreciated. Here are some pics just did a water change

Tank looks great! All i can suggest is make sure you really want to do this before putting anything in. Your maintenance will go up and your parameters may become unstable after a while. That’s why people go bare bottom to begin with. Once sands in the tank, it’s a pain to get out.

If you still do want to put sand, just find a method to slowly add it instead of dumping it in all at once, such as a turkey baster. I wouldn’t put in more than an inch of sand.

I’m thinking of adding a Cortez Stingray the guy at my lfs said that they can go in my tank if I add sand and I told him what size my tank is witch is the Red Sea reefer 425 and he said they can go in a smaller tank than that. What do you think?

They grow really fast and get pretty decent in size. Maybe if you were to change around your scape a little bit I could see it. Tank looks amazing by the way!

Adding a sting ray in a tank your size would be very irresponsible IMO. Not your fault at all but it sounds like he’s trying to make a sale. Your tank, especially with the rock you have isn’t even close to the size you would need. Maybe with another 100 gallons you could get away with it

Won't that puffer eat the invertebrates? Make sure to rinse the sand prior to adding it in. The cloudiness will go away faster after adding in the sand.

I what my concern was because I told him about my tank size and he said it could go in a 50 gallon so I was trying to do some research on them but I couldn’t find anything. Now I know I’ll just leave my tank how it is

I think most people on R2R would agree that doing your own research instead of listening to others, especially store employees always pays off. Good choice! (Thumbs up Emoji) lol

I would add the sand slowly, maybe four or five cups per day.
