So I went bare bottom with my 40g tank and as this tank has aged, the bottom has become impossible to clean and looks “dirty”. I’m not a big fan of sand but I have a large bag of coral rubble on hand. Should I cover the whole bottom with rubble or perhaps just make an island of rubble in the middle? All ideas and suggestions are welcome :) (attached pic of bottom)

I am actually in that same situation now......I have decided to just let coralline grow and cover the whole bottom. There are some very nice coralline covered BBs here that have been posted....hopefully they post their pics again :) I think adding rubble is just going to make it appear cluttered. If you don't want to go that route, maybe add an urchin or two to keep the bottom cleaner?

I will simply leave my experience as is.
Every, and I mean every time I have broken down a tank with sand, or opted to remove, I remind myself to never have sand again. My current setup is similar, but eventually the bottom will be covered in coraline or corals, lol. I love the look of sand for sure, but make sure you have several inverts or fish to aid in the sand disturbance when you put it back in. My 2 cents, lol
Cheers
