So I have a 55 gallon long tank that has been running for over a year now and I currently just run a hob filter and this weekend I want to add a sump I have a 32 gallon sump that I will be using the pump I have is a vectra m2 I won’t be drilling this tank I will be using a hob overflow what overflow do you recommend like size and brand please would help.

This should work fine for your 55, IMO they are overrated for tank size but the pf-300 should be fine for your tank.. I use one on a 40 breeder and love it.

Thank you I was looking at that exact one actually! Have you ever had any problems with it?

I used the E-Shopps 1200 on my 185gl & it worked fine until air managed to get into the siphon & caused it to almost stop working. I never could get it to stop getting air in it so i went to this kind of overflow and it worked much better but the pump setup could go out so I had 2 & a diaphragm kit. Now I have a Shadow overflow & don't have to worry about it.

Do yourself a big favor. Get an overflow like an Eshoppes PF-1000 with 2 drains. It is much easier to get it to run quietly.
It says a Vectra M2 is a 2000 gph pump. Dont use a tiny overflow with it. A PF-300 runs 300gph max.

If you do not want to deal with loosing a siphon, then I would suggest a CPR overflow box with a Aqualifter pump. The Aqualifter pump will make sure you never loose/break a siphon.

Link is for reference, as you could go with the next size up model.

I was thinking about going with a bigger one like this!

Never had any problems at all, just need to set them up properly and to prevent air pockets run them close to their flow rating.. a word of caution about going with to much of an oversized overflow is that with these types of HOB overflows you have to push them hard to prevent air pockets forming in U tube, with the larger models you will need larger return pump and your turnover rate might be overkill for your size tank.

You can also dial the pump down to almost 0 with controller

you cant dial back flow on these types of overflows, you have to push them hard to prevent air pockets from forming in U tubes.

Okay so you suggest the 300? Because I’m about to order from brs

Thats going to be up to you.. the 300 you can push to appropriately 300 GPH giving you about 6x turnover on your 55 and the next size up, the 800 you would probably need to run at least 600 GPH through it to keep it functioning correctly so that would be about 10x turnover. Back in the day people advocated 10x turnover but these day's its much less.

here is a breakdown of flow ratings and tank size recommendations for each of them.. IMO the max tank size is overrated for them
